August 12, 2025 — Berlin, Germany
American Jewish Committee (AJC), the global advocacy organization for the Jewish people, strongly opposes the German government’s decision to impose a partial arms embargo on Israel and urges Berlin to reconsider.
Rather than limiting defensive equipment to Israel, AJC urges Germany to use all available economic and political tools to intensify pressure on Hamas and its main backers, notably the Iranian regime.
“Germany’s goal must remain the complete defeat of Hamas and the unconditional release of all hostages, including at least seven German citizens,” said AJC Berlin Director Remko Leemhuis. “It is difficult to reconcile a commitment to Israel’s right to self-defense with measures that risk undermining its ability to ensure that defense. This embargo conflicts with Germany’s commitment to the security of the State of Israel, which is considered part of the country’s Staatsräson, or national interest.”
Germany is a vital military supplier to Israel, providing around 30 percent of its weapons imports. That support has played an essential role in safeguarding Israel’s security in a challenging regional environment. Any change in that policy should be weighed carefully, especially at a time when Israel continues to face threats to its citizens and the ongoing captivity of hostages.
AJC calls on the German government to work closely with Israel and its allies to find constructive ways to advance their shared goals: the defeat of Hamas, the safe return of all hostages, the protection of civilians, and the laying of foundations for a more stable and peaceful future for Israelis and Palestinians alike.
