Torah, Peoplehood, and What It Means for Advocacy: Understanding Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks

Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks was a leading Jewish advocate of our time, and served as a guiding force for world Jewry as well as a moral and intellectual counsel to a diverse set of leaders across the globe. His respected moral voice and advocacy was directly informed by his religious and intellectual understanding of the Torah. Join Jessica Sacks, former Senior Translator and Scholar at Koren and niece of the late Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, and Rabbi Dr. Samuel Lebens, Sacks Scholar and professor of philosophy at the University of Haifa, in conversation with Meggie Wyschogrod Fredman, AJC Director of U.S. Jewish Communal Engagement and Partnership to explore how Rabbi Sacks’ understanding of Torah shaped and formed his global advocacy and the legacy his newly released translation of the Torah and commentary leave for us. AJC is honored to be holding this program as part of the Rabbi Sacks Global Day of Learning 2025 in which communities around the world come together to honor his memory through learning.

United in Grief and Strength: Honoring Sarah Milgrim z"l and Yaron Lischinsky z"l
May 23, 2025

American Jewish Committee (AJC) and Jews around the world have been left completely shaken by events in Washington, D.C. on May 21, where two members of the Israeli diplomatic community—Sarah Milgrim z”l and Yaron Lischinsky z”l, cherished friends of AJC—were shot and killed after leaving an AJC gathering for young professionals. In this moment of profound sorrow, we unite in grief, reflection, and solidarity—holding one another close as Shabbat approaches, and standing together in strength and resilience.
