American Jewish Committee (AJC) has seen reports of a proposed U.S. multi-point framework being circulated as a potential basis for negotiations with Iran.

For decades, the Iranian regime has made a series of deliberate choices—advancing its nuclear program, developing and proliferating missile capabilities, supporting terrorist proxies, and destabilizing its neighbors—that have brought the region to this dangerous moment.

AJC welcomes the efforts of the U.S. Administration to pursue a credible diplomatic path, grounded in clear principles and enforceable outcomes, aimed at de-escalating conflict and advancing a more stable, secure Middle East.

For any agreement to be durable and sustainable, it must address the core drivers of instability that brought the region to this point and thereby must ensure that Iran can no longer threaten regional or global security. In particular, negotiations need to hold firm on the following principles:

  • Iran must never be permitted to obtain a nuclear weapon. This is not only a matter of Israel’s security, but a global imperative. AJC supports durable, verifiable arrangements that prevent Iran from enriching uranium on its territory, address Iran’s current stockpile of enriched uranium, and eliminate any pathway to a nuclear weapons breakout.
  • Israel’s sovereign right to security and self-defense must be upheld. In particular, Iran’s ballistic missile program, and its capacity to threaten Israel directly, must be verifiably and significantly constrained.
  • The security of America’s Arab partners in the region must be strengthened, particularly — though not exclusively — among those who have advanced regional integration through peace treaties such as the Abraham Accords. These partnerships remain essential to long-term regional stability. AJC also believes that deeper economic integration between Arab states and Israel will be essential to constraining Iran’s ability to economically threaten the region.
  • Iran must cease support to its network of proxies and terrorist organizations. Tehran’s support for armed non-state actors has fueled conflict and instability across the Middle East for far too long.
  • Freedom of navigation must be guaranteed in international waterways, including critical chokepoints such as the Strait of Hormuz. Iran must not be permitted to threaten global energy supplies or use economic coercion as a tool of warfare.

AJC expresses its solidarity with the Iranian people, who have long suffered under a repressive regime that has prioritized ideology and aggression over the well-being of its own citizens. At the conclusion of hostilities, we remain hopeful that the Iranian people will secure the right to a government they deserve.

There remains a diplomatic path to avoid further conflict and to build a more secure future for the region. Iran should take that path and engage seriously with the terms put forward by the United States.
