AJC applauds the California State Legislature resolution urging “each University of California (UC) campus to adopt a resolution condemning all forms of antisemitism.” The bipartisan resolution, sponsored by State Senator Jeff Stone (R-Riverside County), unanimously passed the Assembly today, after the State Senate unanimously passed it in May. “We applaud the California Legislature for unanimously passing this important resolution,” said AJC Los Angeles Regional President Dean Schramm. “Antisemitism must be confronted without any equivocation, for it threatens not only Jews but the values Americans cherish. We join with the Members of the California State Senate and Assembly in urging the UC Board of Regents and all UC campuses to swiftly adopt resolutions condemning antisemitism and to work toward a more secure and friendly environment for Jewish students.” Colleges and universities across the nation have experienced a rise in antisemitic incidents, with several of the most egregious instances occurring on UC campuses. In recent months, among other incidents, four student council members at UCLA initially voted to disqualify student Rachel Beyda from serving on the campus Judicial Board expressly because she is Jewish, and a Jewish fraternity at UC Davis was defaced with Nazi swastikas.
