Latvia

Long and historic engagement

Photo of former Latvian President Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga
Former Latvian President Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga delivers the keynote address at the gala opening of the Shapiro Silverberg Central Europe Office in Warsaw in 2017.

AJC was a very early and persistent voice calling on the U.S. government to recognize Latvian, Estonian, and Lithuanian independence in 1991, and later to support the Baltic states’ accession to NATO in 2002. AJC also supported Latvia’s inclusion in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, and in 2006, entered into a formal partnership agreement with the Latvian Jewish community.

Through the Warsaw-based Shapiro Silverberg Central Europe Office and Brussels-based Transatlantic Institute, AJC is in regular contact with Latvian officials and diplomats.
