Everything You Need To Know About Threats Posed By Iran

American Jewish Committee (AJC) sounds the alarm on, and advocates against, the Iranian regime’s destructive and destabilizing role in the world, which includes repeated calls for the annihilation of Israel; support for terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah; dissemination of antisemitism; violation of the JCPOA (the agreement reached in July 2015 with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany); expansionist interference in the internal affairs of other countries; and pervasive human rights abuses.

AJC, through our offices around the world, works every day to spur the international community to counter the Iranian threat.

The resources below include facts and key insights into Iran related topics.

Why American Leadership Is Critical to Bring Peace and Cooperation to the Middle East
May 27 2026
As a deal to end the war in Iran may be close at hand, the current environment presents the United States with the opportunity to foster a more connected and integrated Middle East. While Iran continues to hold significant leverage, this moment nonetheless presents a pivotal opening for Washington to pursue long-term policies that weaken the regime’s economic reach and deepen American engagement across the Middle East and beyond.

If Europe Wants to Help with Iran, It Can Target Its Proxies
May 11 2026
For nearly five decades, the Iranian regime has exported terror around the world while brutally repressing its citizens at home. Today, Tehran’s rare moment of genuine strategic vulnerability has created an opening for Europe to play a more decisive role.

Ceasefire Update: Extending the Pause, Maintaining the Pressure
April 24 2026
Militarily, escalation risks a broader regional war with potentially diminishing returns—drawing in Hezbollah, disrupting global energy markets through the Strait of Hormuz, and stretching U.S. assets across multiple theaters. Economically, the shock to oil markets is already evident even under current conditions. Politically, a prolonged war would be difficult to sustain domestically and internationally.

A Ceasefire Is Not a Strategy: What It Will Take to Turn the Israel–Lebanon Truce into a Turning Point
April 22 2026
The direct talks and ceasefire announced last week between Israel and Lebanon present a historic opportunity for welcome de-escalation and a dramatically improved relationship between the two countries; however, as long as Hezbollah retains its weapons, along with the power to decide when war begins and ends, no agreement between the two governments will hold.

Debate Iran War Without Blaming Jews
April 16 2026
Across parts of the political spectrum, conspiracy theories about Jewish influence in American foreign policy have resurfaced. Commentators and influencers speak loosely about a “Zionist war machine” or suggest that American policy toward Iran is dictated by Israel or Jewish Americans.

After Islamabad: The Illusion of Easy Options
April 12 2026
The latest round of U.S.-Iran negotiations in Islamabad ended without agreement. That outcome is disappointing, but not surprising. The gaps between the two sides were always going to be difficult to bridge, particularly on the two issues that matter most: Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium and the status of the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s Attacks Expose the IRGC Threat Europe Can No Longer Ignore
March 18 2026
There should have been no surprise at Iran’s growing willingness to use its missile and drone arsenal to go after these targets directly. In April and October 2024, the regime made history when, for the first time, it directly attacked Israel. But, as is always the case, when Israel is the target, all else is context, easily dismissed or disregarded.

It is Time to Permanently Waive the Cyprus Arms Embargo
March 9 2026
In June 2024, then-Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah publicly warned that Cyprus could become “part of the war” if Israel were allowed to use Cypriot territory or infrastructure in a future conflict with Lebanon. It was an extraordinary statement—one that effectively attempted to place an EU member state in the crosshairs of an Iranian regime-backed terrorist group.

Iran War: A Defining Moment for the Middle East—Global Analysis from AJC Experts
Since the coordinated U.S.–Israel military operations launched on February 28—following the Iranian regime’s direct attacks on Israel in 2024—the conflict has escalated dramatically, with the Iranian regime targeting nations and civilians across the Middle East and even parts of Europe. The onslaught underscores how a nuclear-armed Iran would imperil America, Israel, U.S. allies, and the world. Read perspectives from American Jewish Committee experts around the world.

We All Share a Stake in What Happens in Iran
March 2 2026
The Supreme Leader and his forces have brought suffering to their own people, chaos to the region, and violence to the world. The blood of American soldiers and innocent civilians from across the globe is on their hands.

The Venezuela Crisis and the Case for Global Jewish Engagement in the Americas
February 5 2026
While the debate around the short- and long-term implications for Venezuela, the Venezuelan Jewish community, and the Western Hemisphere remains ongoing, what is broadly agreed upon is the profoundly malign activity carried out by Maduro and his predecessor, Hugo Chávez. Over more than two decades their actions devastated Venezuela, decimated its once-thriving Jewish community, and undermined the well-being and security of the Americas as a whole.

Israel's Fight Is For Its Future -- And Ours
June 24 2025
The Iranian regime’s nuclear ambitions are not some distant diplomatic dispute. They represent an immediate, existential threat to Israel. For many of us in South Florida, this is not simply a matter of foreign policy — it is deeply personal.

Iran's Terrorist Expansion to Latin America
November 25 2024
Too few people realize the full extent of Iran’s role in backing terrorist groups across the Middle East, from Hamas in Gaza to Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen. Even fewer are aware of Iran’s expanding influence in the Western Hemisphere, threatening regional stability and U.S. security at an alarming level. But we can’t afford to ignore the threat any longer. It’s time for the U.S. to act, forging a comprehensive plan with our allies to preempt Iran’s geopolitical ambitions in our own neighborhood.

AJC's Open Letter to UN Security Council Members Calling for Global Economic Sanctions and the Reimposition of Ballistic Missile Sanctions on Iran
October 1 2024
On Oct. 2, 2024, AJC released this urgent open letter to UNSC members ahead of their meeting today about Iran's massive ballistic missile attack on Israel. AJC is calling on the Council to reimpose ballistic missile sanctions on Iran and to pass global economic sanctions on the regime.

The Boiling Point: Confronting Iran's Escalating Threat
August 13 2024
With the Islamic Republic of Iran on the brink of developing nuclear weapons and dragging the entire region toward a full-scale war, the US, Europe, and their allies need an urgent policy review to confront the regime’s clear and present danger to global security. It is time to move beyond diplomacy and defense, and take concrete actions to thwart Iranian aggression. The US must rally a global coalition to forcefully counter Iran’s conventional, terror, and nuclear threats.

Facing the Houthi Threat: Time to Stop Playing Defense
August 1 2024
Given Iran’s role in the Houthi attacks against Israel and international shipping in the Red Sea, the time has come to look for opportunities to take more aggressive action against Iranian weapon smuggling, training bases, intelligence platforms, and Houthi leadership. Playing defense is no longer enough to curtail the growing Houthi threat.

Thirty Years Later, Justice for Jews and AMIA Bombing Victims in Argentina Remains Elusive
July 26 2024
When I arrived in Buenos Aires earlier this month to observe the 30th anniversary of the bombing of the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA) building, it was a ritual that had become all too familiar.
