The Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights (JBI) works to amplify the voices of courageous human rights defenders who monitor and protect freedoms, especially through nongovernmental organizations and robust international human rights mechanisms. JBI initiates projects to combat international human rights abuses, particularly by establishing and using authoritative monitoring mechanisms in regional and international organizations. To this end, JBI focuses on research, policy analysis, and consultations with experts and high-level officials, developing strategies to help these bodies work effectively.
JBI has long sought to enable international human rights mechanisms to function in a non-politicized and effective manner. Among JBI’s key projects are strengthening the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN’s treaty monitoring bodies, and its special procedures.
