AJC New York launched its newest program for members of its Donor Recognition Societies, Critical Conversations, on November 11. The inaugural event, held just days after the U.S. presidential election and amid one of the most tumultuous periods in modern Israeli history, featured an illuminating conversation with Herb Keinon, Senior Contributing Editor at The Jerusalem Post. Keinon, a veteran journalist with decades of experience covering Israeli politics and diplomacy, joined AJC New York Regional Director Josh Kramer for an evening of rich insight and thoughtful analysis.
The evening opened with remarks from Suzi Jaffe, Co-Chair of the AJC Arabian Gulf Institute and Past President of AJC New York, who welcomed attendees and emphasized the importance of launching this new series amid global uncertainty and deep communal concern. She underscored the series' goal of convening thought leaders, experts, and AJC advocates for in-depth conversations on the most pressing issues facing Israel and the Jewish people.
Keinon and Kramer explored the implications of Donald Trump’s return to the White House, examining how his administration might reshape the U.S.-Israel relationship in the coming years. Drawing comparisons to Trump’s first term, Keinon identified key moments and strategic realignments that could serve as indicators for what lies ahead. Their conversation delved into regional shifts in the Middle East, the evolving roles of China and Russia, and how Israel can navigate a complex and often unpredictable geopolitical landscape.
At the heart of the evening’s discussion was the human cost of conflict. Keinon spoke to the lived experiences of Israeli families—many of whom face repeated reserve duty call-ups and ongoing uncertainty—and how this national reality is shaping Israeli public opinion, government policy, and expectations of allies like the United States.
The event marked the beginning of a series offering clarity in moments of complexity and a space for thoughtful, informed engagement. Critical Conversations aims to foster dialogue that informs and inspires strategic action on behalf of the Jewish people, grounded in AJC’s mission to combat antisemitism in all its forms, strengthen Israel’s place in the world, and advance human rights and democratic values in the U.S. and around the world.
Critical Conversations is a signature AJC New York series for members of the AJC Marshall Society and National Leadership Council.
