AJC New York brought together Jewish organizational interns from across the city for a special visit to the Consulate General of the Republic of Austria in New York. The group was welcomed by Deputy Consul General Johannes Gassner for an engaging and wide-ranging conversation on diplomacy, international relations, and the role of Austria on the global stage.

The program, part of a series of civic engagement and leadership opportunities, offered college students the opportunity to hear firsthand from a senior diplomat. Deputy Consul General Gassner shared insights into Austria’s foreign policy priorities, the mission of the Consulate in New York, and his own career path in diplomacy. He also spoke candidly about Austria’s efforts to combat antisemitism, preserve Holocaust memory, and promote education about Jewish life and history.

The conversation touched on pressing global issues, including the October 7 Hamas massacre in Israel and its impact on international discourse around democracy, security, and human rights. Interns posed thoughtful questions on topics ranging from Austria’s role in the European Union to the challenges of cross-cultural engagement and the future of multilateral cooperation.

AJC New York is proud of its robust relationship with the Austrian Consulate General, having routine advocacy meetings throughout the year with Consular officials and senior-level Austrian officials and our signature ACCESS NY Hanukkah Celebration at the Austrian Consulate. AJC New York is grateful to create opportunities like this one that inspire the next generation of leaders and global changemakers. Through immersive programming, we equip young professionals with the tools and perspectives they need to lead with purpose in an increasingly interconnected world.
