The Iranian regime’s suspension of all cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is a clear, deliberate act of defiance and threat to international security.
The regime was already in breach of its obligations under UN Security Council Resolution 2231 regarding uranium enrichment and other activities. The latest IAEA report and U.S. intelligence made that crystal clear. Now, the mullahs are personally threatening Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the IAEA— and shutting the door to inspections.
The E3 — France, Germany, and the United Kingdom — must trigger “snapback” sanctions if Iran refuses to reverse course.
Legally, under UNSCR 2231, which endorsed the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, any party to the deal can invoke the snapback provision if Iran is in “significant non-performance.” Refusing IAEA inspections, halting surveillance, and threatening the Director General are textbook violations.
Under these provisions, snapback would have all previously lifted UN sanctions automatically reimposed within 30 days — and no country, not even Russia or China, could veto it.
The Iranian regime is daring the world to do nothing. It must be proved wrong.
At the same time, American Jewish Committee (AJC) urges the United States to take the lead in formalizing unambiguous and inclusive understandings with the Iranian regime that extend the ceasefire between the regime and Israel and end the regime’s decades-long threat to regional and global peace.
Issues related to the Iranian nuclear program — the disposition of its massive stockpile of highly enriched uranium, and its continued ability to enrich — as well as Iran’s ballistic missile development, regional interference, and ongoing human rights violations, must be addressed in any comprehensive diplomatic settlement. If the Iranian regime refuses to negotiate in good faith, further action must be taken.
Additionally, in light of the Iranian regime’s record of international assassinations, bombings, kidnappings, and other terror plots, we call on the European Union and all governments to designate the mullahs’ Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. Doing so would cripple its operations abroad — and make Jewish communities and broader society more secure.
AJC is the global advocacy organization for the Jewish people.
