AJC New York spent a day in Queens immersed in the borough’s extraordinary diversity, combining advocacy with cultural exploration and dialogue.

The day began with a special luncheon at Forest Hills Jewish Center featuring U.S. Representative Grace Meng, Chinese-American leader and co-chair of the House Bipartisan Task Force for Combating Antisemitism. Rabbi Daniel Graber welcomed the group, which included Jewish and Asian American leaders as well as representatives from the New York State Executive Chamber. Conversation focused on strengthening Jewish–AAPI partnerships to combat hate and deepen solidarity. Participants also reflected on how best to convey Israel’s enduring significance to the Jewish people in conversations with non-Jewish audiences—a pressing challenge in today’s climate.

From there, the delegation traveled to Rego Park to visit the Bukharian Jewish Museum. At 87 years old, curator Aron Aronov brought centuries of history to life through stories of resilience, from the community’s ancient roots to survival under Soviet rule. Immersive exhibits—traditional homes, vibrant textiles, artwork, and music—underscored how Bukharian culture continues to flourish in Queens. The visit was both an education in history and a celebration of living tradition.

The final stop was the Hindu Temple Society of North America, where President Dr. Uma Mysorekar welcomed participants to the Ganesh Temple. Touring the space, the group learned about the growth of Hinduism in America and explored striking parallels in cultural values, rituals, and community life shared by Hindu and Jewish traditions. The dialogue highlighted how shared commitments to heritage, education, and faith can bridge even wide differences.

“Queens is one of the most diverse places in the world, and days like this remind us how much stronger we are when we learn from each other’s histories and experiences,” said Marisa Bearak, Assistant Director of AJC New York and a Queens native.

AJC New York’s Queens Advocacy Day captured the essence of its mission: translating AJC’s global priorities to the local level by safeguarding the Jewish people and Israel, advancing democratic values and human rights, and forging partnerships across Queens’ diverse communities.
