The Black-Jewish Coalition (BJC) continues to foster dialogue and deepen relationships through impactful meetings that underscore shared history and advance common goals.

This fall, BJC hosted two significant gatherings. The most recent event took place on Tuesday, December 9, in the offices of BJC Co-Chair and former Texas State Representative Carl Sherman. More than a dozen attendees joined, including AJC regional board members, local elected officials, community organizers, and business leaders.

The meeting began with an engaging presentation by Beri Kaplan Schwitzer, Executive Director of the Dallas Jewish Historical Society, who spoke about the historic Linz House. Following the presentation, participants explored the intertwined Black and Jewish history of Dallas.

This December meeting built on the success of BJC’s October 14th gathering, hosted at the home of BJC Co-Chair and former Dallas City Council Member Jaynie Schultz. Held in Jaynie’s Sukkah during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, the evening invited reflections on themes of gratitude, redemption, exodus, and hospitality—while acknowledging the duality of celebrating joy amid challenging times. The discussion embodied BJC’s mission: fostering understanding, deepening relationships, and advancing shared values through honest dialogue and mutual respect.

As BJC looks ahead, these gatherings underscore the coalition’s commitment to creating opportunities for connection and conversation that honor both historic solidarity and contemporary relevance in Dallas and beyond.
