American Jewish Committee (AJC) and Hillel International are releasing new data today detailing how American Jewish college students are changing how they engage with peers and show up on campus related to their experiences with antisemitism. As part of AJC’s State of Antisemitism in America 2025 Report, AJC and Hillel International partnered to document Jewish students’ experiences during their time on campus.

Conspiracy theories and misinformation are eroding trust, stoking hate and tearing at the very fabric of our society, often with tragic consequences. At American Jewish Committee, we’re seeing those consequences up close — and our new report on “The State of Antisemitism in America,” out Tuesday, reveals how these divisions are affecting the Jewish community, and us all.

American Jewish Committee’s State of Antisemitism in America 2025 Report details perceptions of and experiences with antisemitism for both American Jews and U.S. adults. Significantly, it analyzes the impact of antisemitism in the two years following the Hamas terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023.

In the aftermath of World War II, American Jews experienced a degree of social acceptance and security that has few parallels in Jewish history. However, the American Jewish Committee’s State of Antisemitism in America 2025 Report shows things have changed.

History shows that rising antisemitism often coincides with broader societal polarization, extremism, and declining trust in democratic institutions. In 2025, majorities of both American Jews and the general public report less confidence in the way American democracy is functioning than they did five years ago. Hatred left unchallenged rarely stays contained.

If you go to church, mosque or Hindu temple, chances are you think nothing of the simple act of walking inside. If you go to a synagogue, it’s not that simple.

The rise of antisemitism is having a profound impact on how American Jews are living their everyday lives. More than half of American Jews are continuing to change behaviors due to fear of antisemitism, online antisemitism has reached the highest level ever recorded by AJC's survey, and a majority of American Jews are concerned that AI will spread antisemitism and lead to incidents.

Here are five stories that illustrate some of the troubling findings from AJC's State of Antisemitism Report 2025.

Yesterday, AJC released its State of Antisemitism in America 2025 Report, a comprehensive look at how Jewish Americans and the broader public perceive and experience antisemitism. Based on surveys conducted last fall, the report comes amid continued violence, heightened security concerns, and the spread of antisemitism across social media, campuses, and public discourse. This Advocacy Anywhere explores the key findings, shifting perceptions, and the evolving landscape of antisemitism in the U.S.

Condemning antisemitism cannot be selective or conditional. It cannot depend on whether hate is cloaked in political rhetoric, conspiracy theories or explicit Nazi imagery. It must be immediate, bipartisan and unequivocal.

Jews in America had long been insulated from violent antisemitism. It was something that happened elsewhere. Then, the 2018 Tree of Life synagogue massacre in Pittsburgh where 11 people were murdered changed that and precipitated hundreds of incidents in which Jews have been targeted simply for being Jewish.

Antisemitism is not a Jewish problem. It is a New York City problem. When a student threatens mass violence against Jews, when a synagogue becomes a target, when people are assaulted on the subway because of who they are — that is an attack on the city’s core values and our way of life.

While many incidents at Jewish institutions don’t involve physical threats — graffiti and anonymous threats are more prevalent — they are unsettling, nonetheless. While my Jewish friends and neighbors remain fiercely proud to be Jewish, some have told me they often feel compelled, when they are out in public, to choose between their personal safety and their proud Jewish identity.

Americans who know someone Jewish are more likely to recognize antisemitism, understand it and respond when they encounter it. In my work as AJC’s Detroit community director, I have seen firsthand the impact these relationships and conversations make in helping the broader community understand the fear and vulnerability many American Jews face today.

It has been more than 60 years since the Roman Catholic Church issued “Nostra Aetate,” the groundbreaking document that rejected collective Jewish responsibility for the death of Jesus. By dispensing with two millennia of dogma that Jews were Christ-killers, the church ushered in a new era of what Pope Leo XIV has called a “precious dialogue” between the two faiths, one that remains robust to this day. That is especially important for the Jewish people, who cannot have too many allies at a time when a wave of antisemitism shows no sign of easing.
