Jews once lived in North Africa and the Middle East for millennia and became part of the social fabric of their homelands. There were some 800,000 Jews in these regions after World War II. Barely a decade later, most of them were gone. This pivotal but little-known piece of history is the focus of The Forgotten Exodus, an award-winning podcast from American Jewish Committee. The second season debuted today. Additional episodes will be released weekly through Sept. 23.

AJC New England thanks Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey for signing into law sections 106 and 201 of the FY25 Massachusetts budget. They will establish a Special Commission for Addressing Antisemitism, and prompt the creation of curricula, resources, and professional development opportunities to support antisemitism education.

AJC Welcomes Education Department Agreement with Carmel Unified School District On Its Failure to Adequately Address Antisemitic Acts

American Jewish Committee (AJC) today welcomed an agreement between the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights (OCR) and the Carmel Unified School District (CUSD) which outlines steps the district will take to address antisemitism in its schools. OCR found there were 15 antisemitic incidents dating back to the 2021-22 school year that the district inadequately addressed.

When Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg last week dropped charges against most of the protesters who seized Hamilton Hall at Columbia University on April 30, the announcement left New York’s Jewish community bewildered and angry. The Columbia protests, rife with anti-Israel sentiments, exacerbated feelings of insecurity and vulnerability among Jewish students and faculty at Columbia and beyond, leaving deep scars.

American Jewish Committee CEO Ted Deutch, an alumnus of the University of Michigan, released a statement after the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) announced Monday an agreement with the university following a Title VI investigation. Title VI prohibits discrimination based on race, color or national origin.

American Jewish Committee (AJC) CEO Ted Deutch today testified at the House Ways and Means Committee hearing “Crisis on Campus: Antisemitism, Radical Faculty, and the Failure of University Leadership.” Deutch previously served as a Member of Congress from Florida and was the Chair and Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East and was a founding co-chair of the House Bipartisan Task Force for Combating Antisemitism.
