Everything You Need to Know About Antisemitism

Antisemitism is a tangible threat to Jews and the very fabric of democratic societies. American Jewish Committee (AJC), with a global presence, works every day to combat Jew-hatred through global diplomacy, political advocacy, coalition building, and strategic communications.

The resources below include key insights on antisemitism including the connection between antisemitism and anti-Zionism, antisemitism from the far-right, the far-left, and in the name of Islam. It also includes explanations of philosemitism, the Working Definition of Antisemitism, white supremacists, Holocaust distortion, conspiracy theories, and more.

The State of Antisemitism Around the Globe
December 17 2020
In October, AJC released its first-ever State of Antisemitism in America report. We asked AJC experts to share their insights about nine international communities where particular expressions of Jew hatred are on the rise. Read the highlights.
antisemitismukraine
The State of Antisemitism in Eastern Europe
December 17 2020
Unlike in other European countries, Jews in Ukraine generally do not face acts of violence or public condemnations of Israel. But traditional stereotypes of Jews persist.

The State of Antisemitism in the Middle East
December 17 2020
Over the past century, antisemitism has become commonplace in many parts of the Middle East, including Iraq and Yemen. Myths and conspiracy theories that arose in Europe were imported and altered to blame Jews for many societal problems across the region.
antisemitismindonesia
The State of Antisemitism in Asia-Pacific
December 17 2020
Despite a miniscule Jewish population, hatred and suspicion of Jews is prevalent in Indonesia – home to the world’s largest Muslim population
antisemitismsouthafrica
The State of Antisemitism in Africa
December 17 2020
Antisemitism isn’t widespread across the African continent largely because there is no Jewish population there to marginalize and people are largely ignorant of what it means to be a modern, secular Jew. But the apartheid history of South Africa sets the southernmost tip apart from the rest of the continent. There, antisemitism is often prevalent in the form of anti-Israel rhetoric.
antisemitismscandinavia
The State of Antisemitism in Scandinavia
December 17 2020
Movements to ban infant circumcision have swept through Iceland, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden, threatening to make it difficult for Jews to practice their faith and continue to call Europe home. Other, more violent trends have swept through the Nordic countries, as well.
antisemitismgermany
The State of Antisemitism in Germany
December 17 2020
Though German leaders prioritize the protection of Jews as part of Germany’s Staatsräson, or national interest, the reality on the ground is grim.
antisemitismpoland
The State of Antisemitism in Central Europe
December 17 2020
Antisemitism is nothing new in Poland. But state-sanctioned antisemitism in the form of historical revisionism and politicizing the question of property restitution have emerged most recently as primary challenges for the Jewish community.
antisemitismchile
The State of Antisemitism in Latin America
December 17 2020
Chile has become a dangerous place to be Jewish. Simply put, there is no stigma for antisemites.
The State of Antisemitism in France
The State of Antisemitism in France
December 17 2020
From the children ruthlessly gunned down at a Jewish school in Toulouse in 2012 to the savage stabbing of an elderly Holocaust survivor in Paris in 2018, it is hardly a shock that a majority of French Jews and the general public believe that anti-Jewish hatred is on the rise.

Behind the Numbers: American Jews’ Personal Experiences with Antisemitism
October 30 2020
The numbers in the most recent AJC survey on antisemitism speak for themselves. But the testimonies and stories of American Jews are just as telling. In the wake of antisemitic attacks in New York, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, and Poway over the past two years, many say they fear simply walking down the street, entering a supermarket, or answering a knock at the door. Read some of the stories behind the survey’s troubling findings.

Remembering Ilan Halimi
February 12 2020
The murder of four people in the Hyper Cacher kosher store in Paris in January 2015 served as a wake-up call to Europe and much of the world what French Jews had known for a long time: European antisemitism was back, and with a vengeance. This attack, coming on the heels of the Charlie Hebdo atrocity, could no longer be ignored. The vicious hatred that had been bubbling just under the surface in extreme corners of Europe’s migrant community—not to mention the far-right and far-left political fringes—had boiled over. But the warning signs had been present for at least a decade, since the kidnapping, torture, and murder of Ilan Halimi.
