Everything You Need to Know About Antisemitism

Antisemitism is a tangible threat to Jews and the very fabric of democratic societies. American Jewish Committee (AJC), with a global presence, works every day to combat Jew-hatred through global diplomacy, political advocacy, coalition building, and strategic communications.

The resources below include key insights on antisemitism including the connection between antisemitism and anti-Zionism, antisemitism from the far-right, the far-left, and in the name of Islam. It also includes explanations of philosemitism, the Working Definition of Antisemitism, white supremacists, Holocaust distortion, conspiracy theories, and more.

President Joe Biden takes the oath of office.
Confronting Antisemitism in Biden’s First One Hundred Days
January 28 2021
Antisemitism left unchecked can be a death knell for democracy. Efforts in the first 100 days of the Biden administration to fight antisemitism would show the world that the US places a high priority on promoting pluralism, protecting minorities, and safeguarding democracy. That keeps all Americans safe.

No Room For Complacency In Fight Against Antisemitism
Europe’s rich Jewish history is also an ongoing obligation to assure the trust of Jewish citizens and communities, a responsibility society as a whole must uphold. Therefore, the American Jewish Committee New York Regional Office and the Consulate General of Germany collaborate to build trust in one another and jointly advocate against hate and antisemitism.

Why Defining Antisemitism Is Critical
January 6 2021
We urge Illinois municipalities to consider adopting the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism or to at least review their police department's policies with respect to hate crime reporting. With the cooperation of our city and state leaders, we can make an impact in combating hatred.

Apology For Roald Dahl Accepted
December 28 2020
We can take a lesson from the Dahl family on how to confront the sins of our ancestors and how to reconcile with the complicated legacies and dark sides of those we have loved. We also can adapt literature to reflect the values we cherish.

Antisemitism Is On The Rise In Michigan. All Of Us Can Fight It.
December 23 2020
On the second commemoration of the Tree of Life shooting in late October, American Jewish Committee, of which our organization, Jewish Community Relations Council/AJC, is a regional office, issued its State of Antisemitism in America 2020: Survey of American Jews and Survey of the General Public. Among its many other findings, 88% of Jews found antisemitism to be a problem in the United States today, but only 62% of the general public agreed. More awareness and education are necessary.

How Can Rising Online Antisemitism Be Stopped?
December 14 2020
In the constantly expanding digital universe, purveyors of hate are exploiting the newest communications technologies to threaten Jews. The deleterious impact of the “digitization of antisemitism” was revealed in the 2020 State of Antisemitism in America report recently issued by the American Jewish Committee (AJC).

Antisemitism Threatens Our Democracy
November 24 2020
A careful student can take away many lessons from the history of antisemitism, but one is particularly relevant today: healthy societies do not foster antisemitism. What starts with the Jews rarely ends with them. When societies cannot protect their Jewish population, they will often fail to protect their democracy as well.

Antisemitism Circa 1974 And In 2020
November 11 2020
When I was a kid, I had no idea how to stand up to the bullies and fight antisemitism head on. A few pennies on their own might not seem like a big deal. But the damage inflicted was. It must stop. What do we do? What is our role as Jews and American citizens? We must stand up and call out attacks, physical and otherwise, and demand to be seen and heard. Perpetrators must be held accountable.

California’s Ethnic Studies Curriculum Should Define Antisemitism
October 30 2020
If California educational leaders are serious about combating antisemitism and hate, they should include the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism in the ESMC. Governor Gavin Newsom should endorse the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism.

The State of Antisemitism in America 2020: Insights and Analysis
October 26 2020
This year, for the first time, we carried out two surveys in parallel. Combined, the two surveys form the first-ever AJC State of Antisemitism in America Report. This report lays bare the very different ways American Jews and the general public understand antisemitism, enabling us to identify key challenges and more effectively target our education and advocacy efforts as we seek to eradicate this most ancient form of hatred.

Ignorance About Antisemitism Creates Dangerous Breeding Ground for Hatred of Jews
October 26 2020
Parallel surveys of American Jews and the general public form the basis of the first-ever AJC report on the state of antisemitism in America. The state, simply put, is poor. To the traditional sources of antisemitism — the far right, hard left, and extremists in the name of Islam — we can now add a fourth: ignorance. The lack of awareness and refusal to enable Jews to define hatred against them create a dangerous breeding ground for anti-Jewish hostility.

AJC Position Paper: QAnon
August 27 2020
If we are serious about rebuilding trust and transparency in our government and our democracy, fighting antisemitism and hate, and preventing the spread of misinformation and lies, then we must insist there is no place for QAnon in America or for QAnon followers to gain a foothold beyond the societal fringe.

I Spoke To Nick Cannon About Antisemitism. This Is What I Learned.
August 17 2020
I did not know who Nick Cannon was until he said horribly hurtful things about my people. I now know that he is a very big celebrity, and enormous numbers of people listen to and respect him — that unlike some people who say hurtful things, he is not someone who can simply be dismissed. More important, there was the possibility that something good could emerge from engaging with him — and it has.

Those Responsible For Modern Antisemitism Must Also Be Held Accountable
August 3 2020
One of the most outrageous incidents emerged last week in America’s City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia. Rodney Muhammad, president of the NAACP [National Association for the Advancement of Colored People] Philadelphia chapter, posted to Facebook what clearly was a blatantly antisemitic image that he used to suggest Jews are trying to silence prominent blacks, who themselves have been criticized for their own antisemitic comments and posts.

Latinos, Jews United in Pursuit of Justice for AMIA
July 23 2020
In Philadelphia, Jews and Latinos gathered as we do annually to commemorate the victims, though this year, due to the pandemic, the ceremony organized by the AJC Philadelphia Latino-Jewish Coalition was conducted virtually. We read the names of each victim, said prayers, and again called out for justice. To this day, not one perpetrator of the horrific attack has been convicted.

Graffiti Attacks Bolster Resolve to Assertively Attack Antisemitism
July 23 2020
We look to our elected officials and law enforcement to not only express empathy with the Jewish community by condemning antisemitism, but to commit resources to take concrete actions to apprehend and bring to justice those responsible and to prevent future attacks.

We Must Define Antisemitism in Order to Fight It Effectively
July 14 2020
Only by defining antisemitism, understanding how it manifests itself in society, confronting hate and bias crimes, and combating all forms of hatred can we uphold our values of democracy, pluralism and mutual respect toward the goal of ensuring the safety and dignity of our societies.
