Lebanese President Joseph Aoun arrived at the White House on Tuesday, the first official visit by a Lebanese president in 17 years. At a time when the Middle East is undergoing profound change, this visit should not be viewed as a routine diplomatic engagement. It represents a rare opportunity to ask a question that has seemed impossible for generations: can Lebanon and Israel finally begin building a different future?

Over the years, we have used personal stories to talk about AMIA. They sustain memories across generations, humanize large-scale tragedy and remind us that every life lost was a world unto itself. AMIA is a nonsectarian agency serving the broader community, and the attack wounded not only Jews, but all of Argentine society. Remembering is something all of us must do, not just Jews.

When France’s partners, its allies, and now even Lebanese authorities themselves affirm that there is only one Hezbollah, continuing to argue otherwise can no longer be described as realism. It amounts to preserving a diplomatic fiction that few people still seem willing to believe.

The direct talks and ceasefire announced last week between Israel and Lebanon present a historic opportunity for welcome de-escalation and a dramatically improved relationship between the two countries; however, as long as Hezbollah retains its weapons, along with the power to decide when war begins and ends, no agreement between the two governments will hold.

There should have been no surprise at Iran’s growing willingness to use its missile and drone arsenal to go after these targets directly. In April and October 2024, the regime made history when, for the first time, it directly attacked Israel. But, as is always the case, when Israel is the target, all else is context, easily dismissed or disregarded.
