University of Michigan President (and Project Interchange alumnus) Criticizes Professor’s Refusal to Recommend Student Study in Israel

A University of Michigan professor refused to recommend a student whose study destination was Israel, explaining that his refusal was due to his support of academic boycotts of Israel. University of Michigan President and Project Interchange alumnus Mark Schlissel issued a strong statement to the University's Board of Regents rebuking the professor, stating, "personal views and politics should never interfere with our support of students. It is counter to our values and expectations as an institution,” and noting that the university has been deeply engaged on the issue and will take appropriate steps in response.
