Everything You Need to Know About Antisemitism

Antisemitism is a tangible threat to Jews and the very fabric of democratic societies. American Jewish Committee (AJC), with a global presence, works every day to combat Jew-hatred through global diplomacy, political advocacy, coalition building, and strategic communications.

The resources below include key insights on antisemitism including the connection between antisemitism and anti-Zionism, antisemitism from the far-right, the far-left, and in the name of Islam. It also includes explanations of philosemitism, the Working Definition of Antisemitism, white supremacists, Holocaust distortion, conspiracy theories, and more.

Normalization of Holocaust Parallels In COVID Era
December 26 2021
The misuse of Holocaust terminology and images has attained disturbing acceptance and respectability during the gravest global public health crisis in a century. Many opposed to wearing masks, getting vaccines and other measures to prevent the spread of the deadly virus have willfully accepted and are promoting a narrative that such steps are akin to what the Nazi regime did in Germany. Without any regard for historical truths, some elected officials, candidates for political office, and media personalities have been amplifying Holocaust equivalences.

The Zionism = Racism Lie Isn’t Over
December 16 2021
By revoking resolution 3379, the UN determined that Zionism is not a form of racism, a determination it has not made regarding any other national movement. Clearly, this has been a setback for those seeking to use the UN as a platform to advance their extreme anti-Israel agenda. Will they learn from this experience and act differently in the future? Sadly, Israel’s adversaries have not relented.

For Me, Hanukkah Has Been A Symbol Of Freedom. This Year, I’m Thinking About Antisemitism
December 3 2021
We are at a critical moment in history. Antisemitism is becoming normalized within mainstream society. Ignorance, apathy, and hate all contribute to the spread of antisemitism, and have found fertile ground amid a global health crisis, rising economic uncertainty, growing political divides, declining American leadership abroad, and a massive shift in how people engage online.

Hanukkah 2021: Fighting Antisemitism –Here Are 8 Rays Of Hope
November 28 2021
Antisemitism in the United States is rising. American Jewish Committee’s (AJC) newest annual report on antisemitism revealed that, in the last 12 months, 24% of American Jews were personally targeted by antisemitism and 41% of U.S. adults have witnessed an antisemitic incident. Yet we also must see the data from the 2021 report as a beacon. It illuminates the problem so we can work toward solutions. In the spirit of Hanukkah, dedication and hope are required to counter antisemitism.

Antisemitism Is Rising As Education About The Holocaust Declines
November 21 2021
In mobilizing all sectors of Texas society to fight antisemitism, it is critical to ensure that memory of the Holocaust is preserved and, importantly, that knowledge about the Nazi-organized murder of 6 million Jews is commonplace.

In Defense of Antisemitism Data
November 4 2021
The Forward published a piece challenging the American Jewish Committee’s newly-released 2021 State of Antisemitism in America report — the largest and most comprehensive surveys of American Jews and the general public ever conducted on the subject, carried out by one of America’s leading opinion research firms — and accusing AJC of intentionally misrepresenting its findings to promote a sinister agenda. But the piece is itself rife with misrepresentations, cherrypicked quotes, and other curiosities, all seemingly intended to undermine an invaluable piece of research and support a deeply flawed thesis.

Focus Needs To Be Maintained On US Antisemitism
November 1 2021
The outpouring of empathy from Americans of all faiths, ethnicities and ages following the murder of 11 Jewish worshipers at Tree of Life Congregation Shabbat services on October 27, 2018, was heartening. But the attention to Jewish concerns about endless antisemitism, even after additional fatal attacks in Poway, Monsey and Jersey City, turned out to be more transient than enduring.

Now’s The time To Face Persistent Antisemitism Head-On
October 30 2021
Over the past 12 months in Atlanta, we have seen rising antisemitism on our streets, in our schools and expressed by elected officials across the political spectrum. It has been demonstrated by Holocaust distortion, swastikas scrawled in schools, references to Jewish power and remarks labeling Israel a racist and Nazi-like state. That might help explain why 90% of American Jews believe antisemitism is a problem in the United States and why 82% say it has increased over the past five years, according to the 2021 American Jewish Committee State of Antisemitism in America Report.

Hate Is On The Rise: Antisemitism Surges On America's Far Left and Far Right
October 26 2021
The time has come for Americans of all backgrounds and persuasions to realize that antisemitism is multifaceted and multiform, and that no group or community is immune to it. Our leaders must denounce antisemitism even – especially – when it manifests in their own political camps. Only after antisemitism is tackled resolutely, no matter its form and source, can we have any hope of eradicating it.

The State of Antisemitism in America 2021: Insights and Analysis
October 25 2021
The 2021 State of Antisemitism in America report is based on two parallel surveys, of American Jews and of the U.S. general public. Majorities of both American Jews and the U.S. general public agree that antisemitism is a problem in America, though to differing extents. While 90% of American Jews believe antisemitism is either a very serious problem (40%) or somewhat of a problem (50%), that number drops to 60% among the general public, with 21% saying it is a very serious problem and 39% saying it is somewhat of a problem.

There Is No Opposing Side To Holocaust Education
October 19 2021
A state-by-state survey of young Americans last year showed that more than half in Texas could not name a concentration camp or ghetto where Jews were imprisoned and tortured during the Holocaust, despite there being more than 40,000 sites in Europe. This lack of historical knowledge makes a Southlake school administrator’s advice to offer students an opposing perspective on the Holocaust even more disturbing.

It’s Time To Reject Racism But Disconnect From Durban
September 21 2021
All responsible governments should now do what they should have done 20 years ago: Reject racism but disconnect from Durban. More countries should join those that have said they will not participate on September 22. They must reject Durban and any other anti-racism agenda that is tainted by antisemitism.

Thanks for Sharing My Antisemitism Tweet. Now Do Something About It
September 6 2021
Last week, the FBI released its 2020 hate crime data, revealing that hate crimes targeting Jews accounted for 54.9 percent of all reported crimes motivated by hatred of the victims' religion. Struck by that statistic, I tweeted it out, noting that American Jews make up less than two percent of the U.S. population—evidence of the massive overrepresentation of Jews among the victims of religious bias crimes in America. The tweet blew up. In the days since I sent that tweet, it has been retweeted and shared thousands of times, including by several individuals with hundreds of thousands or even millions of followers

It’s Time To Take A Page From Silicon Valley And Disrupt Antisemitism
August 16 2021
AJC has launched Disrupt Antisemitism, a new initiative that is the first-ever incubator for young American Jews focused solely on developing bold ideas to combat antisemitism. Inspired by the incubators of Silicon Valley, we are calling on young Jews from around the country to submit bold ideas to take on antisemitism locally, nationally or virtually. We are looking for impactful ideas developed by and for young people.

To Fight Antisemitism, You Need To Clearly Define It
August 3 2021
One of the most important and useful tools in the global fight is the Working Definition of Antisemitism.
There were over a dozen “authors” of this definition, originally issued by the European Union’s Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia in 2005 — scholars on antisemitism, Jewish organizational experts and advocates in Europe, Israel and the United States. I was one of them

If Europe Is Serious About Fighting Antisemitism, It Must Skip Durban 20
July 23 2021
Countries are lining up to declare they will not attend the20th anniversary of the UN’s notorious 2001 World Conference Against Racism, held in Durban, South Africa. The gathering is set to take place on September 22, during the opening days of the UN General Assembly.

Ilhan Omar Has a Problem With Jews
July 1 2021
Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has a Jewish problem. Despite her repeated denials and the rush to circle the wagons from some left-wing Jews, there's an undeniable pattern.

Europe Must Double Down On Fighting Antisemitism
June 11 2021
Terrorists firing rockets on Israel and thugs pummeling Jews in Europe and America must be condemned – no ifs, no buts. Only if we have moral clarity about the causes and sources of anti-Jewish violence can we vigorously continue down the path of fighting all forms of antisemitism.
