AJC’s Surveys of American and Israeli Jewish Millennials

Graphic saying AJC's Survey on American & Israeli Jewish Millennials in white on a dark blue teal background

On April 25, 2022, American Jewish Committee (AJC) released the first-ever surveys that highlighted the perspectives, attitudes, and opinions of Millennial American and Israeli Jews. The surveys' results provide a richer understanding of the social, cultural, religious, and identity implications for the Millennial demographic – and the Jewish community as a whole – and highlight the commonalities and differences of young adults in each region. This invaluable information will inform AJC initiatives to strengthen the vital relationship between American and Israeli Jews. Research analysis was provided by Philippe Assouline, an independent consultant focused on Data Science, Consumer Insights, Marketing, and Communications.

Millennial Jews Are Choosing Between Israel And Social Acceptance
May 2, 2022
A new American Jewish Committee (AJC) survey revealed that 53% of US Jews ages 25-40 feel connected to Israel. For those who do not, there are two camps. First are those who have disengaged over disagreements with Israel’s policies. Second are those who fear social ostracization driven by both blatant and casual antisemitism, which is being fueled by anti-Israel sentiments among their peers. Our survey indicates that millennial US Jews may be willing to suppress their Zionism, or even their Jewishness, to remain in good social standing, and we must be cognizant of the long-term toll this will take on this key demographic. No Jew, no person, should have to hide who they are and what they believe.

How Do American Millennial Jews Feel About Israel?
April 28, 2022
What are American millennial Jews’ attitudes towards Israel and how has anti-Israel activism on U.S. college campuses changed that relationship? AJC surveyed American and Israeli millennial Jews to better understand their experiences, attitudes, and opinions about Jewish identity, connection to Israel, and attachment to one another. In a special live People of the Pod recording, AJC Director of Alexander Young Leadership Meggie Wyschogrod Fredman sits down with AJC ACCESS Global Director Dana Steiner, AJC ACCESS Israel Manager Lironne Koret, and Opinion, Analytics, and Communications Strategist Philippe Assouline, to unpack this data and discuss the implications for the Jewish community.

American Jewish Committee Surveys of U.S. and Israeli Jewish Millennials
April 25, 2022
American Jewish Committee surveys of U.S. and Israeli Jewish millennials show that Israel-Diaspora relations remain strong, but also indicate points of divergence regarding what role diaspora Jews should have in influencing Israeli polices, antisemitism in the U.S., and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The first-ever parallel surveys of Jews, ages 25-40, were conducted by YouGov in the U.S. and Geocartography in Israel for ACCESS, AJC’s young professional program, and AJC’s Contemporary Jewish Life Department. “Gauging the views of millennials is critical to ensuring strong, enduring ties between the world’s two largest Jewish communities,” said Dana Steiner, Director of AJC ACCESS Global.
