American Jewish Committee Advocacy at UN General Assembly 2023

Last week, world leaders gathered in New York for the United Nations UN General Assembly (UNGA) session. As the global advocacy organization for the Jewish people, AJC experts from around the world led the Jewish community’s diplomatic outreach. 

Just a few days ahead of the Jewish New Year, Israel’s Mossad Director David Barnea shared that the agency and its international partners have thwarted 27 planned Iranian attacks on Jews and Israelis abroad this year alone. According to the U.S. State Department, the Iranian regime has sanctioned and carried out assassinations, terror plots and attacks in 40 countries since coming to power in 1979. This includes the July 18, 1994, bombing of the Argentine Mutual Israel Association (AMIA), which killed 85 people and injured 300 others when a suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden truck into the six-story building at 633 Pasteur St. in Buenos Aires. It was the deadliest antisemitic attack outside Israel since the Holocaust. Three decades later, those responsible for this wanton act of terror continue to walk free.

American Jewish Committee CEO Ted Deutch today met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following the Prime Minister’s address to the United Nations General Assembly. Deutch was among a group of American Jewish leaders invited to speak with Netanyahu.

U.S. President Joe Biden delivered his third address to the annual gathering of world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday. 

When leaders from all 193 United Nations member states gather on Sept. 19 in New York, the spotlight will focus on the speeches given at the General Assembly Hall. And at the same time, all week long, American Jewish Committee (AJC) experts from around the world will lead the Jewish community’s diplomatic outreach to these leaders to urge them to expand and strengthen ties with Israel, counter rising antisemitism, stop the spread of extremism, and more.

American Jewish Committee (AJC) was joined Tuesday evening by diplomats and dignitaries from around the world for its annual Global Jewish Diplomacy Reception. 

Featured speakers included Ambassador Dan Shapiro, Senior Advisor for Regional Integration, Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, U.S. Department of State; His Excellency Michael Herzog, Ambassador of Israel to the United States; Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt, Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism; and the Honorable Robert Silvers, Undersecretary for Policy, U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Following Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi’s address today to the United Nations General Assembly, American Jewish Committee condemned Iran’s record of rampant human rights abuses and support for anti-Israel terror groups, and reiterated its calls for the international community to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons capability. President Raisi’s address comes just over a year after the murder of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman arrested by Iran’s morality police for not properly wearing a hijab, on the heels of the barring of International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors from sites in Iran, and less than a month before key sanctions are set to expire on the regime’s ballistic missile program.

Following historic popular protests that rocked Iran, triggered by the death of Jina Mahsa Amini, amidst the backdrop of pervasive violence and discrimination against women, the Iranian government remains resolutely committed to denying its people’s human rights.

Since Raisi assumed the presidency, Iran’s repressive practices, targeting religious minorities, women human rights defenders, and others, have only deepened, notwithstanding expressions of alarm by international human rights experts.
