Campus

While American universities are more hospitable to Jews and Jewish life than they have ever been, there have been troubling instances, too, particularly around attempts to delegitimize Israel as a nation state and to dehumanize its supporters.  In 2002, AJC published a statement signed by more than 300 college and university presidents condemning intimidation on campus, noting in particular such behavior directed toward Jews and Zionists. Our publication, "Why Campus Anti-Israel Activity Flunks Bigotry 101," has been an integral part of the successful effort across the country to reject divestment initiatives. AJC has worked quietly with some universities, helping them take positive steps to change their campus culture, and have labored jointly - and very publicly - with our colleagues in the United Kingdom and Israel to combat efforts to boycott Israeli academics.  With our partners at Gonzaga University's Institute for Action Against Hate, we have been pioneering the creation of the new interdisciplinary academic field of Hate Studies.
