AJC Outraged by Pat Robertson’s Insensitive Comments on Ailing Israeli Leader

January 5, 2006 - New York - The American Jewish Committee expressed outrage at the Rev. Pat Robertson's comments that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's stroke resulted from "dividing God's land." Robertson's comments aired earlier today on his television program, "the 700 Club."

"While Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is fighting for his life in a Jerusalem hospital, Pat Robertson callously blames the massive stroke he suffered on the Israeli government's peace process policy," said AJC Executive Director David A. Harris. "Robertson's comment reflects the height of insensitivity and is also a perfect example of what happens when theological fanaticism clouds good judgment."

"While we appreciate Robertson's longstanding commitment to the state of Israel, we believe it's best left to the Israeli people and their elected leaders to make the fateful decisions on Israel's enduring quest for peace and security," Harris added.
