AJC's National Immigration Summit in Washington, June 2011
From June 5-7, 2011, AJC convened stakeholders from mainstream sectors of society in the national debate for comprehensive immigration reform for a 2 day conference. The voices of these leaders, who represent affected businesses, professions, unions, religious communities, and public institutions such as education, healthcare and law enforcement, are often not heard because rational discussions are frequently drowned out by harsh and misinformed anti-immigrant rhetoric.

This summit provided an unparalleled opportunity to hear from national immigration advocates, strategists, ethnic leaders and elected officials; to build the necessary relationships for creative collaboration; to engage in a civil discourse about this critical public policy issue; and to develop the pragmatic solutions that will strengthen and secure America.

The summit centered on three central themes:
  • The economic growth that enables America to compete successfully in the increasingly competitive global marketplace must be based on a rational, effective, comprehensive immigration policy.
  • The security of our nation and our communities is strengthened when: a) our borders are secure, b) we can document who is here, and c) immigrants have a stake in the country.
  • The values of justice, human rights, pluralism, civil rights and the rule of law that underpin our nation are upheld by the policies and actions of our government, and by the citizens who speak up to ensure them.
