ADVOCACY

Israeli Assistance to Africa

The Africa Institute facilitates technical cooperation between Israel and Africa. Israel and Africa’s 53 states share a common history. Like Africa, Israel also gained independence after World War II. In its 61 years of independence, Israel has achieved a remarkable level of economic development. As the World Bank has recently observed, since 1995 Africa’s economies have been growing by an average rate of 5 percent. The Africa Institute facilitates technical cooperation between Israeli and African officials in agriculture, water management and renewable sources of power.

Sudan
The Africa Institute supports campaigns to help end crimes against humanity in Darfur, encourage the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in the South, and improve the treatment of Sudanese—as well as other African-- asylum seekers in Israel.

EVENTS & TRIPS

The Africa Institute hosts events and organizes trips to Africa to educate American Jews about Africa’s challenges and opportunities.

For example, the Africa Institute helped organize a study tour to Rwanda. Twelve Jewish students from the US and South Africa visited memorial sites and met with survivors, of the 1994 genocide. Though the trip focused on Rwanda’s horrifying past, the students also visited a girls’ high school to hear how young Rwandans see the future of their country.
