Development Intern
Los Angeles, California

The Development Intern is primarily responsible for supporting fundraising programming and efforts through research, event preparation and implementation. The resource development program builds and maintains leadership and relationships to support the important work of AJC.

Development programs include plate dinners honoring community leaders, exclusive speaker’s events for various giving society members, missions abroad, as well as individual solicitations, grant submissions and planned giving.

Primary responsibilities consist of assisting the Associate Development Director and working in partnership with lay leaders to implement giving society events for President’s Council, Los Angeles Leadership Council, and National Leadership Council, Comedy with a Cause, assisting with the production of attractive and compelling printed development material, coordinating leadership development with program staff, and conducting ongoing donor relations.

Major themes emphasize AJC’s unique approach to advocacy and diplomacy on behalf of the Jewish community, as well as the distinct staff - lay leader partnership that is a hallmark of AJC. In addition, development efforts leverage the impressive achievements and important work of the agency to elicit support from donors, members and organizations.

Desired qualifications include an engaging, yet diplomatic and polished demeanor as well as excellent writing and communication skills. Extensive knowledge of Jewish community individuals and institutions, academic grounding in a relevant field and pertinent experience is also critical.

International Relations Intern

The International Relations Intern is primarily responsible for supporting IR programming through research, event preparation and implementation. AJC’s IR program builds and maintains relationships with more than 60 local and regional consulates and representatives of the diplomatic corps to advance AJC’s IR agenda.

IR programs include consular meetings, national days/cultural events and guest speakers in addition to communications with consulates as dictated by world events.

Primary responsibilities consist of assisting the Program Director and working in partnership with lay leaders to implement AJC’s Diplomatic Marathon at the UN General Assembly, Promoting Tolerance tour for young leaders from emerging democracies, Channukah Party for agency and community leaders, Annual Luncheon, Consular Corps Tour of Jewish Los Angeles as well as supporting foreign diplomatic missions attended by AJC leadership.

Major themes emphasize confronting Iran’s quest for nuclear weapons technology, energy security, support for Israel, ending the genocide in Darfur as well as addressing regional and/or bilateral issues in order to advance democratic values and build mutual understanding.

Desired qualifications include an engaging, yet diplomatic demeanor as well as excellent writing and communication skills. Extensive knowledge of international issues and institutions, academic grounding in a relevant field and pertinent experience is also critical.

Israel Affairs Intern

The Israel Affairs Intern is primarily responsible for supporting IR programming through research, event preparation and implementation.

Israel Affairs programs include meetings and events targeting diplomats, elected officials, ethnic and religious leaders, as well as cultural activities and guest speakers.

Primary responsibilities consist of assisting the Program Director and working in partnership with lay leaders to implement AJC’s Project Interchange first-time trips to Israel for non-Jewish leaders, Channukah Party and Annual Luncheon for agency and community leaders, and Israel Independence Day events and celebrations.

Major themes comprise Israel’s positive contributions to the world in the fields of science, medicine, technology, culture and art as well as promoting a nuanced, thoughtful examination of regional security issues. AJC Israel Affairs also responds in a strategic fashion to current local, national and international events. Other themes include confronting Iran’s quest for nuclear weapons technology, energy security as well as addressing regional and/or bilateral issues in order to advance democratic values and build mutual understanding.

Antisemitism, Intern
New York, NY

David Duke, a neo-Nazi and former Ku Klux Klan leader, was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives in 1989 as a Republican. Thereafter he ran for Senator and Governor, and almost won. Beth Rickey, a Republican State Committeewoman, made exposing Duke her mission in life. She followed him to neo-Nazi meetings, found him selling Holocaust-denying materials from his legislative office, and organized a group which helped expose Duke’s racist and antisemitic beliefs and activities. She died last year, but left her Duke materials to AJC. The task for a summer intern will be:

-   Organize and catalogue these materials
-   Write up a description of the collection, and its importance.

The intern will work closely with the director of the division on anti-Semitism and extremism, who will supply the intern with three books to read and some additional material as background to understanding the project.

We are looking for a Development Intern whose primary responsibility is to support the department's efforts through research, conceiving of program, event preparation and implementation. The development builds and maintains leadership and relationships to support the important work of AJC.

Finance Division, Intern
New York, NY

AJC is a 104-year-old international Jewish advocacy organization headquartered in New York, NY.  The Finance division is seeking an enthusiastic, intuitive and detail oriented Intern to provide support for the division's ongoing projects and new initiatives. We are looking for a college student who is well-organized and has an interest in finance.

The Intern will work closely with the Chief Financial Officer and the Controller on a variety of projects pertaining to the finances of AJC.  These may include planning, forecasting, budgeting, month end close, journal entries, analysis, reconciliation, and other projects as assigned.

Given the current economic climate that has significantly impacted all not-for-profit organizations, this is a crucial time for AJC and the Finance Intern has the potential to make a significant impact on the future of the organization.

A minimum commitment of 14 hrs/week for a minimum of 10 weeks is required.  Start date is immediate.  The position is unpaid.  We will cover public transportation expenses and lunch.

Long Island Region, Energy Leadership Awards Intern

AJC’s Long Island Regional Office with offices both in NYC and in Northport on Long Island is planning an Energy Leadership Awards Gala on June 2, 2010. AJC LI is seeking an enthusiastic, well-organized, and responsible Intern (either full time or part time) to provide support for this event. While it is anticipated that the internship will conclude on June 3rd, there is a possibility to extend the internship beyond that date.

AJC LI is one of 26 AJC domestic regional offices and operates under the leadership of a board of directors and a professional director. AJC LI engages in diplomatic outreach to the countries of India, Rwanda and El Salvador. Local priorities include furthering energy security and energy independence from the Middle East; supporting comprehensive immigration reform and, building inter-group partnerships.

Qualifications:

-   Excellent computer and database management skills: adept in Microsoft Word, Excel,    Powerpoint, knowledge of Photoshop preferred;
-   Excellent speaking skills and ability to communicate effectively with high level corporate leaders, board members, and elected officials;
-   Ability to conduct internet reseach
-   Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team
-   College student or mature high-school senior preferred

Responsibilities:

-   Create (as needed) and manage database of invitees, sponsors and advertisers
-    Work with Event Planner, board members and Regional Director as needed
-    Attend planning meetings – either in person or via conference call
-   Work closely with people developing an electronic journal
-   Keep our internet page updated as it relates to this event
-   Make telephone calls as needed to invitees
-   Help to troubleshoot
-   Provide general office and administrative support

Middle East and International Terrorism, Research Intern

AJC’s Division on Middle East and International Terrorism is seeking an enthusiastic, well-organized, and responsible Research Intern to provide support for the division's ongoing projects and new initiatives. We are looking for a college student who is passionate about Israel and has an interest in international relations, public affairs, or political science. Background in Middle East studies and/or languages is preferable. Recent high school graduates with proven abilities, a mature attitude, and recommendations will also be considered.

Responsibilities include:
- Monitor national and local media on subjects of current events in Israel and the rest of the Middle East, terrorism, and homeland security in the United States
- Monitor local and international, Arab and Muslim media outlets in English
- Scan, copy, and organize research documents and materials
- Assist with research projects and gathering of information for upcoming publications
- Provide general office and administrative support.

A minimum commitment of 10 hrs/week and up to 15 hrs/week is required.

New York Region, Intern

AJC’s New York Chapter is seeking an enthusiastic, well-organized, and responsible full-time Intern to provide support for some of the Chapter’s ongoing projects and new initiatives.  We are looking for a mature college student who has an interest in domestic policy, including immigration reform and/or energy security.  Background in public policy and/or political science, and/or interfaith relations and coalition building is desirable, but not necessary.  Recent high school graduates with proven abilities, a mature attitude, and recommendations will also be considered. 


Office Services, Green Project Intern
New York, NY

AJC is applying for LEED certification. LEED is an internationally recognized certification system that measures how well a building performs energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, indoor environmental quality, and the stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts. LEED certification is achieved through a process of awarding credits to reflect their potential environmental impacts. The Office Services Department would like to use an intern to coordinate various aspects of this project. The particular tasks and skills are enumerated below.

The intern will work as part of a team to identify low cost improvements that reduce energy and operating costs of our building. He/She will perform basic analysis, research, collect data, provide records and write descriptions of the various building systems. This work will also include tracking progress of improvements and taking before and after pictures of upgrades. He/She will assist in finding products that are certified green and monitor our usage. The person will attend Green Building meetings at AJC and the NYC Green Building Council.

The intern will work on credits for a Building Management System and metering, light pollution reduction, cooling tower chemical management, building operation plan, refrigerant management, water fixtures and commissioning.

 Qualifications:           
         Interest in environmental issues
         Excellent writing and speaking skills
         Ability to conduct research using the Internet
         Must be a self starter
         Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, knowledge of Photoshop preferred
         Must have some science or engineering background
         Knowledge of building systems and analysis skills strongly preferred
        College degree preferred

Full time committment is preferred.  Project will be completed in June 2010.

Russian Jewish Affairs, Research Intern

AJC’s Division on Russian Jewish Affairs is seeking an enthusiastic, well-organized, and responsible Research Intern to provide support for the Division’s ongoing operations, projects, and new initiatives. We are looking for a Russian-speaking undergraduate or graduate student who has an interest in international relations, public affairs, Russian-Jewish communities in the U.S. and abroad, and political science. Recent high school graduates with proven abilities, a mature attitude, and recommendations will also be considered.

Responsibilities include: assistance in recruiting participants and organizing AJC’s Russian Leadership Training Program; monitoring national and local English and Russian media and web sites on subjects on anti-Semitism; working on AJC’s Russian-American web site; organize research and office documents and materials; assist with research projects and gathering of information for upcoming publications; provide general office and administrative support.

A minimum commitment of 12 hrs/ week for minimum of 10 weeks is required. Start date is immediate. The position is unpaid. We will cover public transportation expenses and lunch.

Asia Pacific Institute, Intern
Washington DC

AJC’s Asia Pacific Institute (API) is seeking an enthusiastic, well-organized, and responsible Intern to provide support for the Institute’s ongoing projects and new initiatives. We are looking for an undergraduate or graduate student who is passionate about the Jewish people and has an interest in international relations, public affairs, political science and/or history. Background in Asian studies and experience in Asia is preferable. Capability in an Asian language, especially Mandarin, is preferable.  API covers South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific.

The intern will work out of AJC’s Washington, DC office as part of the Asia Pacific Institute. He/she will be involved in every aspect of API’s work, including helping develop international relations, monitoring events and trends, attending conferences and briefings, conducting special research projects and writing briefing papers. The intern will receive mentorship and work closely with AJC staff to strengthen relations among the U.S., Israel and the nations of Asia Pacific. There may be some involvement with the Jewish communities of Asia Pacific as needed. The intern will also have an opportunity to participate in some other AJC events unrelated to Asia Pacific. Some administrative support will be required.

This internship is unpaid but AJC will cover any business expenses incurred.

Latino and Latin American Affairs Institute, Kovadloff Internship in Latin American Affairs
Washington DC

The Kovadloff Internship in Latin American Affairs is designed to develop future leaders in the areas of international and domestic politics, diplomacy and public relations with a special interest in Latino and Latin American affairs.

The intern will work out of AJC’s Washington, DC office as part of the Latino and Latin American Institute. He/she will be involved in every aspect of the Institute’s work, including international and intergroup relations, and special research projects. The intern will receive high-level mentorship from senior AJC staff and work closely with them to build new and improve relations between the U.S., Latin America and Israel; express solidarity with Jewish communities in Latin America; promote democracy, human rights, and stability throughout the Hemisphere and establish coalitions with Latino communities in the United States.

Interns must be excited to engage the world through a Jewish lens, have a passion for making a difference, and an interest in exploring the venues for cooperation between Latinos and Jews and among Latin American countries and their Jewish communities. Spanish language skills are required.

The Kovadloff Internship in Latin American Affairs honors Jacob Kovadloff, a cherished member of the AJC family whose lifelong contributions made an everlasting impact on Latin American and world Jewry. Jacob devoted his life to defending the Jewish people, building bridges with other communities, fighting for human rights and democracy, and strengthening ties between the United States and Latin America.

The Latino and Latin American Institute is an AJC initiative to further American Jewish relations with the Latino community in the U.S. and governments and Jewish communities across Latin America. The Institute works with AJC partners in the region to strengthen Jewish life, deter terrorism, ensure that democracy and pluralism remain strong, and advance relations between Latin American countries and the U.S. and Israel.

Time requirements are negotiable. This internship is unpaid.

International Relations Intern

AJC’s Office of Government and International Affairs (OGIA) is actively engaged in international diplomacy and public policy advocacy, managing relations between AJC and foreign governments, Congress and the Administration, and a range of civic, religious, ethnic and human rights groups in Washington. OGIA oversees AJC’s international offices and its various regional institutes, and works to advance Middle East peace, assure Israel’s security, contain strategic threats to the US and its allies, enhance cooperation with the Arab world, safeguard human rights, combat anti-Semitism and all forms of bigotry, and promote democratic values around the world.

 

OGIA is seeking an enthusiastic and responsible intern to provide support to the research and programmatic division of OGIA. We are looking for an undergraduate or graduate student who has a background in international affairs, Middle East history/politics, political science or a related field. Applicants must have excellent research, writing and editing skills. Attention to detail is critical.

 

The intern will research and update briefing materials covering political developments in a variety of countries; compile reports on selected international topics; help organize diplomatic and other meetings; and maintain a database of diplomatic contacts. 

A minimum commitment of 15 hours/week for at least 15 weeks is required.  Start date is immediate.  The position is unpaid; transportation/incidental costs will be covered.
