This is a time when Americans are eagerly focused on presidential primaries.

This week is also important for another reason.

President Bush is visiting the Middle East.

He’s stopping in Israel to meet with Prime Minister Olmert.

Both leaders are committed to a two-state solution—Israel living side by side in peace with a Palestinian state.

It’s going to take courage and perseverance. And, it’s going to take the sustained commitment of Palestinian leaders. Too often in the past, chances were squandered by Palestinian leaders unwilling to abandon violence and live in peace with Israel.

For Israel, peace has been the name of the game from the get-go. In fact, that quest goes back nearly 3,000 years. It was the Hebrew prophet Isaiah who set forth the vision: “Nation shall not lift up sword against nation. Nor shall they learn war anymore.”

The American president and Middle East leaders will try to advance that vision this week. May they be successful.
