Video: Eran Lerman on the 6 Day War
Eran Lerman, director of AJC’s Israel/Middle East Office, recalls the harrowing days leading up to the Six Day War, how Israel emerged victorious, and what has happened since that fateful period in June 1967. “People tend to forget what happened before the war,” says Lerman. “There were three long harrowing weeks of siege,” when Arab nations threatened to destroy Israel. Plans were made to use public parks in Tel Aviv as makeshift graveyards for some 30,000 Israeli civilian causalities. In the end “there was no choice” for Israel in striking at Egypt, Jordan and Syria in a completely defensive operation. “If there ever was a justified war in human history this was it. We were protecting our homes, our survival,” says Lerman.
