Detailed Description of Collection

Series I: Chronological Files, 1906-46. Boxes 9, 3.75 linear feet

Scope/Contents: This series records activities of the American Jewish
Committee from 1906 through 1946. The bulk of the collection deals with the AJC’s response to the crises for European Jewry between and during the world wars, and AJC’s steadfast efforts to change the restrictive immigration policy in the United States so that more victims of persecution could find refuge during the interwar period. The documents exhibit AJC’s concern over growing anti-Semitic persecution, propaganda, violence, and prejudice. During this period, AJC sought to enlist the cooperation of Christian and interfaith groups to combat anti-Semitic sentiment on the domestic front. Much of the materials consist of correspondence of AJC leaders. There is record of the passing in 1929 of Louis Marshall, a founder and longtime president of  AJC. He was succeeded by Cyrus Adler. Besides letters, the series includes memoranda, articles, press digests, minutes, reports, statements, and copies of petitions

Arrangement: Arranged chronologically.

Series II: Subject Files, 1906-32. Boxes 16, 6.66 linear feet

Scope/Contents: This series records events of the period from 1906 to 1932. However, there are a few documents in this series (and folders labeled accordingly) that exceed this time limit and go into the 1940s.  The papers in this collection shed light on many noteworthy events, including the following:

In January 1921, AJC distributed a statement condemning the spread of the anti-Semitic Protocols of the Elders of Zion; AJC President Louis Marshall was instrumental in bringing an end to anti-Jewish condemnations on radio station WHAP in 1927; AJC sent a public letter that rallied public opinion against the anti-Jewish ignorance and prejudice displayed by the mayor of Messena, NY, in the aftermath of the disappearance of a child in September 1928; AJC influenced the filmmakers of King of Kings to remove anti-Semitic stereotypes and not to show the film in countries with rising anti-Semitism and anti-Semitic policies; AJC influenced Christian leaders to join in protesting anti-Semitic stereotypes in a Passion play and battled the proselytizing efforts of missionaries in 1929.

Arrangement: Arranged alphabetically by major organization or other subject. Within individual folders, correspondence may be arranged by date, but the folders themselves are not in linear chronological order.
