Visit Israel to Understand

December 11, 2012 – New York – The AJC weekly radio messages are broadcast on the CBS radio network, before The Osgood File. All AJC radio commentaries since 2001 are available at

The full text of this week’s commentary follows:

For many who've never visited Israel, their image is often formed by the media.

But the media don't always tell the full story.

To the contrary, as the saying goes, "If it doesn’t bleed, it doesn't lead."

But the reality of Israel is far different.

Each year, we at AJC take many high-level groups from around the world to Israel.

For most participants, it's their first visit.

They see just about everything and hear many points of view.

Some typical comments from first-time visitors:

"I had no idea the country was so beautiful."

"I was amazed to see such a diversity of people – of so many religions, backgrounds, and ethnicities."

"Israel's regional situation is far more complex than I ever realized. Now I understand there are no easy, off−the−shelf answers in Israel’s neighborhood."

"What a vibrant democracy – a feisty media and political parties galore."

Israel. The more you know, the more you understand.
