AJC Praises Israeli Response to Latrun Monastery Attack

September 5, 2012 – New York – AJC praised the widespread Israeli condemnation of the terror attack on the Latrun monastery near Jerusalem.

"Those responsible for this reprehensible act need to be punished severely," said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "Freedom of religion and freedom of worship are among the most basic foundations of the state of Israel."

Israeli leaders across the political spectrum echoed the prime minister’s statement.

The attack came a day after Migron was evacuated by Israeli forces, implementing an Israeli Supreme Court ruling declaring the West Bank settlement illegal. Hateful graffiti slurring Arabs and Christians, and referencing Migron, were left on the monastery walls.

“This despicable attack on a Catholic religious institution in Israel is intolerable,” said AJC Executive Director David Harris. “Israeli authorities will, we are confident, make every effort to apprehend and punish those responsible, and seek to prevent any recurrence of such an act of hatred.”
