Religious Freedom, Mutual Respect

The full text of this week’s commentary follows:

Christmas is just around the corner.

For many, it’s a time of special joy.

For some, though, it can be tougher.

For those serving in uniform overseas, for example, the separation from loved ones can be especially difficult.

Our thoughts are with them. They’ve put themselves in harm’s way so that back home we can live in peace.

And for Christians who live as minorities in countries with religious persecution, it can be downright dangerous for them to worship openly.

We have something special in America.

In my town, for example, we have many different houses of worship, including a church offering weekly space for Muslim prayer services.

In other words, we have religious freedom – and mutual respect among faith groups.

My wish at this time of year?

That one day the whole world will aspire to the religious freedom and mutual respect we celebrate here.

Happy holidays from AJC to our Christian friends and neighbors.
