Once again, the American people have
As always, Election Day brought
exhilaration to some, disappointment to others.
That’s the inherent nature of electoral
But, in the end, the biggest winner of all
is neither a particular candidate nor party.
Rather, it’s all of us who are blessed to
live in a flourishing democracy.
Here, the ballot, not the bullet, rules.
Here, the losing candidates concede, the
winners take office, and no one thinks twice about smooth transfers of power.
And here, we are, and shall always remain,
I come from a family which lived without
My mother suffered, first, under communism,
then, later, under Nazism.
My late father experienced Nazi tyranny.
And my wife endured the dictatorship of an
For us, there’s nothing more precious than
the gift of freedom.
And there’s no better celebration of that
freedom than Election Day.
