Media Neglects Hamas Reality

The full text of this week’s commentary follows:

If after the attack on Pearl Harbor, a headline read: "Japanese- American violence breaks out," you'd be angry, wouldn't you?

After all, such a headline creates a false equivalence between the attacker nation and the victim nation.

That's how I felt in recent days reading some media headlines.

Consider this from the Los Angeles Times:

"Israel, Palestinian militants exchange strikes in Gaza Strip flare-up."

Or this from Voice of America: "Israel-Gaza Violence Escalates."

Let's be clear.

Gaza is ruled by Hamas.

The U.S. and European Union have declared Hamas a terrorist group.

Hamas's goal is Israel's destruction.

That's why Hamas fires rockets and mortars at Israel, seeking to kill and maim.

Like any country, democratic Israel must respond to defend itself.

But for some in the media, they can't, or won't, distinguish between the arsonist, Hamas, and the fireman, Israel.

That's outrageous!
