Bilateral Initiatives

  • U.S. and Pakistan, June 2007: The U.S. deported to Pakistan Hafiz Muhammad Hamid, brother of LET chief Hafiz Mohammed Saeed. Hamid was the imam at the Islamic Center of Greater Worcester, in Massachusetts, and had been fighting immigration violations for the previous several months.
  • England and Spain, August 2007: A British court ruled that three suspected ETA terrorists - Zigo Ruiz Jaso, 29, Iñigo MarÍa Albisu Hernández, 23, and Ana Isabel López Monge, 36 – comprise a reserve cell of the Basque separatist group that was waiting for orders to launch attacks in Spain and would be extradited to Spain to face terrorism charges. They were arrested in Sheffield, England in April 2007 just days after a European arrest warrant had been issued for them in Madrid.
  • Thailand and Sri Lanka, August 2007: Three senior suspected LTTE operatives - Sujit Gunapala, 27, Sasiljaran Teverajah, 27, and Satiepawan Arseawatap, 34 – who were arrested in Thailand in 2003 on charges of attempting to smuggle weapons to Sri Lanka, were deported to Sri Lanka.

Regional/International Initiatives

  • Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism, June 2007: Meeting in Kazakhstan, representatives from 38 nations and observers from the International Atomic Energy Agency and the European Union convened to further their goals combating nuclear terrorism.
