NEW YORK – The media has fueled speculation in Greece and Cyprus about the implications of the surprise phone call of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Recep Tayyip Erdogan on March 22. There is evidence, however, to back up those who believe that the diplomatic development will not disturb the progressive deepening of relations among Greece, Israel, and Cyprus and among their diaspora communities. Last week Israeli Energy and Water Minister Silvan Shalom assured his Cypriot counterpart Giorgos Lakkotrypis "that Israel intends to cooperate with Cyprus on Mediterranean energy developments," according to the Jerusalem Post, and he added, "Israel’s reconciliation with Turkey will not harm the other two countries' relations." The Cypriot newspaper Fileleftheros reported that Israel and Cyprus would hold joint exercises, on April 25. The website Israelnationalnews.com reported that “the exercise will focus on the security of the Eastern Mediterranean and that of gas companies.”
