Manhattan: Whatever his expectations, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s trip to Tehran for the Non - Aligned Movement summit (“Man of the hour,” editorial, Sept. 2) elevated the status of one of the world’s leading human rights abusers and undermined international attempts to isolate Iran’s rogue regime. Ban’s words would have been equally effective in a video message, especially as his speech was not broadcast on Iranian TV. He failed to meet with any opposition leaders, dissidents or prisoners, and avoided mentioning Iran’s name when criticizing threats to destroy Israel, condemning Holocaust denial and calling for respect for UN resolutions. Will Ban continue ducking when world leaders come to New York for the General Assembly opening? Let’s hope he and his advisers will have learned how to speak up.
