This Friday, we celebrate our nation’s birthday.

Birthdays are occasions for presents.

America has given us big presents – freedom and promise.

But what present are we giving back?

There could be no better gift than a new energy policy.

As the Fourth of July weekend approaches, high gas prices are a painful reminder of what we face.

We can do better.

There are ways out of this mess, not overnight but over time. We need political vision. And each of us must do our part.

Meanwhile, we’re giving daily presents to other countries, some hostile to American values.

Consider this.

We import annually about 3.6 billion barrels of oil.

At $140 per barrel, that’s an outflow of about $500 billion per year.

Imagine the economic stimulus if more funds stayed right here.

It’s up to all of us to make it happen.
