The full text of this week's commentary follows:

In life, there are few things more important than having a friend.

I mean a real friend who’s there for you not just in the good times, but, even more so, in the tough times.

A friend you can always trust. A friend you can always count on.

The same is true not just for people, but also for countries.

Take our country.

America needs friends around the world. It’s essential for us.

We need friends we can always trust, friends we can always count on.

And yes, we need friends who fully share our outlook and values.

And nowhere is that more true than in the turbulent Middle East.

Amidst the unfolding violence, upheaval, and uncertainty there, America has one such friend.

A friend we can trust. A friend we can count on. A friend who shares our democratic values.

That exceptional friend?

Israel, of course.

Israel. The more you know, the more you understand.
