This week, Israeli President Shimon Peres receives America’s highest civilian honor.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is rarely given to world leaders.

Other recipients include German Chancellor Angela Merkel and South Africa’s legendary Nelson Mandela.

In making the announcement, President Obama said:

“In his life, President Peres has fought for Israel’s independence, and he has fought for peace and security. [H]e helped build the nation that thrives today, the Jewish state of Israel…. But beyond these extraordinary achievements, he has also been a powerful moral voice that reminds us that right makes might, not the other way around.”

AJC salutes President Peres.

He’s devoted his long career to Israel’s democracy, economy, defense, and link with the U.S.

And, as a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, he has tried valiantly to create a new Middle East, based on coexistence and cooperation.

Congratulations to Shimon Peres!
