What explains the special link between America and Israel?
Shared values and shared morality are the most frequent answers.
Both are true, say top former officials, Robert Blackwill and Walter Slocombe. They worked in senior defense and diplomatic positions in several administrations.
And they add a third, lesser known dimension to the special bond.
They cite "common national interests and collaborative action to advance those interests."
They note "there is no other Middle East country whose definition of national interests is so closely aligned with that of the U.S."
While America contributes to Israel's well-being, the reverse is also true, they stress.
They point to counter-terrorism, security, and intelligence cooperation.
They praise Israeli-developed defense equipment used by our military in Iraq and Afghanistan, including lifesaving armor.
And there's more.
The U.S. and Israel. Shared values, morality, and strategic interests.
