AJC Radio Message: Oil Empowers Nations Threatening U.S., Global Security

August 19, 2008 – New York – What do Russia, Iran, Venezuela and Saudi Arabia have in common? “High oil prices fill their coffers and empower them,” says AJC Executive Director David A. Harris in his national radio commentary.

“It’s another wake-up call for America to get serious – and fast – about a national energy policy that increases our self-sufficiency,” says Harris. “If we succeed, and we can, the world will be safer, our economy stronger, and the environment better protected.

Harris’s weekly messages air on the CBS radio network during the Osgood File. All AJC radio commentaries since 2001 are available at www.ajc.org/radiocommentary.

The full text of this week’s commentary follows:

Russia launches a military assault on Georgia, claiming it was provoked.

Despite UN resolutions, Iran continues its uranium enrichment program, widely believed to be for nuclear weapons.

Venezuela buys weapons from Russia and offers Moscow a military base. The Venezuelan president rails against the U.S. and extols his friends in Iran.

And Saudi Arabia funds extremist religious groups that are no friends of women, non-Muslims, or democratic values.

Notice a common denominator among the four countries?

You’re right – oil.

High oil prices fill their coffers and empower them.

It’s another wake-up call for America to get serious – and fast – about a national energy policy that increases our self-sufficiency.

We’re in this together. All 50 states, both political parties, public officials and private citizens.

Think about it. If we succeed, and we can, the world will be safer, our economy stronger, and the environment better protected.
