January 3, 2012 – New York – The AJC weekly radio messages are broadcast on the CBS radio network, before The Osgood File. All AJC radio commentaries since 2001 are available at www.ajc.org/radiocommentary.
A new year has arrived.
Here are three wishes:
First, that America will get really serious about energy security.
As long as we depend on some bad actors for oil, we’re endangering our national security while strengthening theirs.
Which brings me to the second wish.
Iran thinks it has the world over a barrel – of oil, that is.
That belief allows it to pursue nuclear-weapons capability, and threaten the world.
Iran can’t be allowed to succeed. That’s been U.S. policy under Presidents Bush and Obama. 2012 will be a decisive year.
And third, it’s election season, a celebration of American democracy.
There’ll be lots of heat and passion. But, at the end of the day, let’s remember we’re one nation.
We can’t let partisan politics paralyze decision-making.
And we dare not be diverted from the big strategic, political, and economic issues swirling around us.
Too much hangs in the balance.
This is David Harris of AJC.
