We stand with Israel as it takes risks for peace

We stand with Israel as it takes risks for peace

July 14, 2000 - The New York Times

The Honorable Ehud Barak
Prime Minister of Israel
Jerusalem

Dear Prime Minister Barak:

As you seek a negotiated end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the American Jewish community looks on with hope and confidence.

We hope and pray for a durable, secure peace – one that maintains for eternity the ancestral and fundamental link between the people and the land of Israel.

We have confidence in you, the democratically elected Prime Minister, and in our own Government, a proven friend of Israel and determined partner in Middle East peace.

We know the choices ahead will be difficult, and that only Israel can make them. The risks of ceding land for the promise of peace are great, and understood by anyone who has seen Israel’s narrow borders and the scars its people wear of past wars and terrorist attacks. But the risks of continued conflict are incalculable. We know that a democratically elected Prime Minister and Government of Israel will weigh these risks and choose the safest course.

We and our country, staunch friends and supporters of Israel, stand ready to support you, Prime Minister, in the risks Israel assumes for a secure peace with the Palestinians and all its Arab neighbors. We wish you success in the current negotiations.
