AJC Outraged by Arson Threat against Presbyterian Churches

November 15, 2004

November 15, 2004 -  NEW YORK – The American Jewish Committee is deeply disturbed and concerned about a reported arson threat against Presbyterian churches.

The threat, first reported by the Presbyterian News, came in an anonymous letter sent to the Presbyterian Center in Louisville that referred to the church's policy on Israel.

"Threats of violence against any houses of worship are intolerable," said the American Jewish Committee.

"AJC opposes the Presbyterian Church decision to launch a process towards divesting from companies doing business with Israel, an economic boycott step that undermines the peace process.

"However, differences are not resolved through violence. AJC has spearheaded a high-level national interfaith dialogue with the Presbyterians and other Protestant denominations to address the divestment issue and will continue to work towards a reversal of the misguided Presbyterian action."
