AJC Joins in Multi-faith Gathering in Egypt for Peace

January 21, 2002

January 21, 2002 -  JERUSALEM -- The American Jewish Committee is welcoming today's accord signed by leaders of the Jewish, Muslim and Christian communities of Israel and the Palestinian Authority that gathered in Alexandria, Egypt.
Rabbi David Rosen, AJC's international director of interreligous affairs, who participated in the Alexandria meeting, congratulated the Archbishop of Canterbury for taking the initiative for this historic gathering and for the joint statement.

The statement, applauded by AJC, condemns violence, especially violence carried out in the name of religion, rejects the rhetoric of incitement and demonization, calls for mutual respect for Holy Sites and religious worship, establishes an interreligious council, and urges the return of the Palestinian and Israeli political leaders to the pursuit of peaceful negotiations.
