AJC Salutes New Co-Leader of German Green Party

November 17, 2008 – New York – AJC extended today congratulations to Cem Özdemir, the newly elected co-leader of the Green Party in Germany. Özdemir has been a longstanding participant in the Turkish-Jewish Roundtable, sponsored by AJC’s Berlin Office.

“Your election is a tribute to your ability to promote mutual understanding among Germans of all backgrounds, and to advocate forcefully on their behalf,” wrote AJC President Richard J. Sideman and Executive Director David A. Harris.

The full letter follows:

Dear Cem,

On behalf of AJC, we offer our warmest congratulations on your election as co-leader of the Green Party. This historic achievement is, above all, a tribute to your ability to promote mutual understanding among Germans of all backgrounds, and to advocate forcefully on their behalf.

We have come to know you through your participation in the Turkish-Jewish Roundtable sponsored by our Berlin office, your appearances before our Board of Governors, and your partnership on key issues of shared concern.  For years, we have benefited from your insight into issues of integration and identity, stood with you in the fight against all forms of discrimination, and admired your personal commitment to democratic values.

We value our longstanding friendship, and we shall look forward to its continuation in your new capacity as co-leader of the Greens.

With best wishes.

Cordially,

Richard J. Sideman, President

David A. Harris, Executive Director
