AJC Provides Humanitarian Aid to Georgia

August 25, 2008 – New York – American Jewish Committee (AJC) is contributing to humanitarian relief efforts in Georgia. The AJC donation comes from its Harriet and Robert Heilbrunn Humanitarian Fund.

“Humanitarian relief has been at the core of AJC’s work for more than a century,” said AJC Executive Director David A. Harris. “Our tradition commands us to compassionately respond to those suffering after the ordeal of recent events in Georgia.”

AJC's donation to the Public Movement ‘Multinational Georgia’ (PMMG) will help provide emergency resources, including medicine, housing, and food, for a substantial number of the Georgians displaced during the invasion.

In addition, AJC is providing Hillel-Tbilisi with assistance for the local Jewish community. AJC's donation will fund a variety of resources for Jewish students, including a program aiding Gori's Jewish community, which was directly impacted during the crisis.

AJC’s Harriet and Robert Heilbrunn Humanitarian Fund has provided assistance to crises in, among other countries, Burma, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Kosovo, Turkey, and to tsunami victims in South Asia.
