AJC Welcomes Israeli Recognition of Theophilos III

December 17, 2007 - Jerusalem - The American Jewish Committee applauds the Israeli government for its decision to recognize Theophilos III as Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem.

"This welcome, and long overdue, step strengthens religious freedom in Israel and positively contributes to Greek-Israeli relations around the world," said Rabbi David Rosen, AJC's international director of Interreligious Affairs.

Israel’s recognition of Theophilos as rightful Patriarch follows determined efforts by AJC, and by other Jewish and international groups, since his unanimous election by representatives of all Orthodox Churches in 2005.

"AJC’s commitment to fostering deeper ties between the Orthodox Church and the Jewish community will also be positively influenced by this decision," said Rosen.
