October 17, 2007 - New York - The Jacob Blaustein Institute for the Advancement of Human Rights (JBI), an institute of the American Jewish Committee, extends its congratulations to His Holiness the Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso) on receiving the Congressional Gold Medal today in Washington, D.C.
The Dalai Lama has been a courageous and steadfast voice of support for fundamental human rights, particularly the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion and related freedoms of speech and association.
As the spiritual head of the Tibetan Buddhists, he teaches "by doing" - his personal actions, and his strong belief in nonviolence as a means of solving problems have been an inspiration to Tibetan Buddhist followers as well as to admirers around the world.
"We congratulate this remarkable religious leader," said E. Robert Goodkind, chair of AJC's Blaustein Institute, and AJC Honorary President, "and we look to the day when the faith community he heads is free from restrictions on its religious and cultural freedoms and related human rights."
AJC's Blaustein Institute, founded in 1971, will be present for the Congressional Gold Medal ceremony today in Washington to extend these congratulations to His Holiness.
